Upon the Death of My Mother

May 11, 2008

When I heard the news, the first line that occurred to me came from Camus’s existential but cautionary novel, “The Stranger”: Ma mere est morte is the first line. I called my son in San Francisco, saying, “Fitz, we must do the right thing.” No, we didn’t want to be condemned like Camus’s Meursault, for not displaying remorse. I packed my bags and flew from New Mexico to Nevada, fr...

KCE Trustees Contract With Rabbit

May 10, 2008

After what must have been a grueling executive session, the Kit Carson Board of Trustees emerged at 11:45 to vote six-five in an open meeting to sign a three-year contract with CEO Luis Reyes. Reyes has worked the Coop beat for about fifteen years. President Bobby Ortega asked the board to respect the decision, saying the negotiations had been ongoing since the fall of 2006. Reyes, aka “The Rabb...

Updates: County and Coop

May 09, 2008

Below Horse Fly posts excerpts from a potpourri of public announcements. One of the marks of the post-modern is fragmentation. In Tiny Taos there is so much going on it's difficult to get a handle on who enjoys what and will attend what event. The crowds are frequently small due to competing events—especially during a crowded campaign season.

Catching up: the county commissioners are consid...

Comedy of Errors

May 08, 2008

Breaking News: Here are the candidates for the board of the chamber, which is a bit of a mystery organization: Linda Kneif, Sharon Bumpas Mitchell, Marc Coan, Wylie Elson, Ronald (Ronnie Lee) Urban, Loretta Gonzales, Kate O’Neill, Luis Reyes. Given Reyes controversial relationship with "accountability" at both the moribund Hispano Chamber and a lack of financial reporting, which he promised b...

Tally Richards Dances Away

May 07, 2008

On the back wall of my office, hang two large photographs by Paul O’Connor: In the lower one Saki Karavas, seated and dressed in a morning jacket, stares straight at you, the smoke from his cigar curling up. Above him, staring off into the middle distance, the onetime glamour girl and Café Society sparkler, Tally Richards, middle-aged in the photo, holds a cigarette. She stares off into the mi...

IBEW Endorses Mylet & Martinez

May 06, 2008

The IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) has endorsed Luisa Mylet and Toby Martinez for the KCE Coop board. See below.

KCE trustees are, reportedly, trying to rush through and sign a contract with CEO Rabbit Reyes on May 9, prior to the May 13 KCE election. Opponents say contract negotiations should be left up to the new board. Proponents say elections should play no role in t...

Budgets, Blast Center, Judicial Complex

May 03, 2008

For local government junkies, it’s a great week. The council is in retreat for budget matters for three days. Sure is a change from the days of Slick Gus, when Mr. Iron Fist slipped the budget by in one day, fifteen minutes per department. We predict rolling eyeballs from our councilors by the time the Curmudgeon of finance gets done with department heads.

According to the fine print, the to...
